Honouring the Ancient Dead?

I defer to no one in my admiration for the people who originally built Stonehenge. With this in mind, I’m reproducing a detailed comment submitted by Frank Somer, which you can see was originally posted on the static “Druids” page above. English Heritage poster advertising Tintagel

Last Sunday, I spent a very pleasant and enjoyable day at Tintagel – if you’ve been there, you won’t need me to tell you about it, but if you’ve not visited the place, I strongly suggest you go there. All the English Heritage staff I spoke to were extremely pleasant and helpful, while the setting and the ruins were wonderful beyond my ability to describe.

Rage, rage against the dying of the light…

A few days ago, this heartbreaking photograph of a mother gorilla holding her dead baby aloft in a German zoo enclosure made global news for reasons that briefly left me wondering if I lived on the same planet as everyone else. As this link and numerous others makes clear, the emotions displayed by this distraught creature left many people wondering if it were possible that gorillas and other animals could feel grief in the same way that we do. I must admit that I’ve long thought this was so self-evidently true that I’d never for a moment seriously considered otherwise, but it doesn’t do to automatically assume that we all think in the same way.
