Thank you for your kind words, John, as we never tire of hearing appreciative comments such as yours. Your ideas about Stonehenge and Silbury are also welcome because you've clearly given them a lot of thought, and as I always say, we're glad to hear the views of others because they give us all something to ponder.

We'll continue to put up as much original information as we can, while it's fair to say that you've come along at a time when we'll be expressing some very grave doubts indeed about the recent "official" lines taken on Stonehenge and Silbury. Well, it's a dirty job, but someone's got to do it.

As more evidence comes to light it is clear that the Neolithic and Bronze Age builders were not random and that they had a plan perhaps only locally but, if Professor Thom is to be believed, then maybe it was extended Nationally.

The fact that monuments like Silbury Avebury and Stonehenge were contemplated is a wonder in itself. Their completion really defies belief if we think of how much organization, training and sheer team effort was required of a "primitive" community - simple farmers.

I have never seen a TV program that shows the wonder of these sites. Really the only way to appreciate them is to see them in their own setting. With a little relevant reading and an open mind your may be able to formulate your own ideas as as to the WHY. In all probability those thoughts will be just as valid as the best informed Archaeologist approaching the problem with a predetermined mindset.

Clearly at Stonehenge the site was the key and the bluestones were essential to make whatever it was at the site work. Other sites see stones imported fair distances so the same logic applies - site is the key - the megalithic or earthwork makes it work. Random building for the sake of it surely would have seen a reversal of that logic?

Thank you for an excellent site which I have only just discovered following a recent revival of an interest in prehistoric Britain.

"History lite" - what a brilliant turn of phrase, but what a shame that there was any need to invent it at all and what an outrage that there should be any remotely good reason for applying this description to a BBC specialist factual commission on the most recent excavations at Silbury Hill, of all places.

Do me a favour, Anthony - when you've read the file that Pete sent, let us know how you think it compares to the documentary, bearing in mind that it was put together some years beforehand. I'd just like to know if I'm the only one who thinks that there was a ton of detailed, engaging information about Silbury that somehow didn't make it onto the screen.

I was similarly underwhelmed with the Silbury documentary, excited as I was by the prospect I ought to have known what we'd get - history "lite".

The conservation/excavation debate's intriguing too - personally I'm just relieved that she's still upright after the recent years of neglect.

Is EH's first class document still publicly available at all? You hear so little about construction techniques (Silbury 1, then 2 then 3...) that when you do come across sources that tell you the HIll has 17' high radial chalk block walls backfilled with chalk rubble you really start to get a sense for their expertise. Not that I can remember where I read that, maybe Michael Dames?

Dennis,

Thank you for your dedication to exploring every possibility, your willingness to share your thoughts and discoveries, and your sheer determination not to let public awareness of the wonders that are Stonehenge, Silbury and others "go quietly into the night." Certainly there is much to be disheartened about, but as long as seekers such as yourself keep alive the spirit of exploration and discovery, and continue asking those 5 "W's" with the expectation of finding the answers and the truth, apathy will never entirely take hold. Kudos for all that you and Pete do!
